Mario Kart 8 Guide: All Coin Unlockables And What Do Coins Unlock

Mario Kart 8 Guide All Coin Unlockables And What Do Coins Unlock
I was hardly halfway through my first race when the question hit me, why am I collecting all of these coins and what is their purpose? This Mario Kart 8 Guide: All Coin Unlockables And What Do Coins Unlock lists all of the currently available karts and items unlocked via collecting coins and some basic tips and tricks to get a lot of coins much quicker. Most people know the basics of the coins, that were first introduced in Mario Kart 7, but for those of you new to the franchise, they do a little more than unlock cool things.

When racing collecting coins is key to victory. When you first pick up a single coin you get a tiny speed boost, perfect for getting your nose in front on that last lap. However, the coins also offer an accumulative speed boost – granting additional speed to your character for every coin you’re holding up to 10.

um your wrong dude coins were 1st introduced in mario kart SNES and did the same thing increase your speed. also yoshi bike is not unlocked at 600 coins. i’m up to 2k and still haven’t unlocked it?

Did they also accumulate to unlock special customization options for your kart? ;)

  • Tarkan Huseyin

Any one else from nine the circuit special kart no unlocking for them for some reason won’t unlock even tho am past 2000 coins

  • Sharon

I disagree completely with your list of what order items are unlocked. We got the game when it was released and started playing right away. There are four of us playing and we have all gotten different items at different amounts of coins. I also earned the plane glider, metal wheels, and sponge wheels, but have yet to earn the cloud glider. It appears random, but I was actually googling to see if there were things I haven’t discovered yet, or if anyone had discovered a true pattern to the unlockables.

      Hi Sharon.

I wiped my data and started from the beginning and you’re correct. The unlocks are random in a similar way to the characters. It does appear however that the type order remains the same. Example:

I didn’t unlock “The Duke” at 700 Coins but I did unlock another vehicle in the same section.

Sorry, I wasn’t aware it was random as I just went through it the once.

      • Sharon

So at 700 coins you unlocked a bike?

I’ll have to pay more attention the next time we turn on the game and see if all the categories are the same. There would be a pattern there then!
