Mafia III is the third installment in the Mafia series, and the first in the series to be developed by the newly-formed development studio, Hangar 13, for whom it serves as the first title.
Mafia III is, like its predecessors, a third-person action-adventure game set in 1968, in which players take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a biracial orphan and Vietnam War veteran as he returns to his hometown of New Orleans after the war. His friends murdered by local mobs, Lincoln Clay decides to set out on a quest for revenge. Joining the “Black Mob”, Clay becomes an enemy of the Italian Mob, who attempt to murder Clay. Surviving the murder attempt, Clay decides to start his own criminal organization and take on the Italian Mob and work his way up to defeating the criminal boss Sal Marcano, a quest in which he is aided by three allies: Cassandra, Burke and the protagonist of Mafia II, Vito Scaletta.
The New Orleans of Mafia III is a vast open world in which players are free to tackle objectives as they see fit, using the approach they prefer. Players can use violent force, using shotguns and revolvers to dispatch enemies, or instead use stealth to sneak past enemies without being noticed. Players can also perform executions in melee combat, but the focus of the game remains in its third-person shooting. The game furthermore features a cover system, allowing players to avoid enemy gunfire. After defeating non-player characters or enemies in the game, the player can interrogate them to learn more about his objectives.
The game features an authentic and unique 1968 New Orleans environment, featuring music by artists like The Rolling Stones and The Kinks. Players can take charge of the city of New Orleans by invading and conquering bases of the Italian Mob and installing the player’s lieutenants in place instead. Depending on the lieutenant selected, the player earns special perks, for example, calling a payphone to call in a favor from friends while escaping from the police. Apart from the main story, there are side-quests in which the player can participate.
