You are then fighting for that kingdom, but you aren’t part of the kingdom. As you fight more and more, you earn more renown and people start to know who you are in the kingdom you joined. I joined a faction mid war so I had a ton of battles thrown at me. After awhile of fighting and raising you influence, you can go to a castle or castle town and speak to the lord there. Tell them you wish to become more then a mercenary and become a vassal. They will direct you towards the faction leader.

You will have to find he faction leader, which sucks if they are at war because they move around so often. However as a vassal you will now have the right to own land and use your influence to propose votes and raise armies for the kingdom.
