In order to break the purple crystals in Borderlands 3, you will have to progress to a certain point in the story. After you complete the mission “Beneath the Meredian” you will be able to bust the crystals with melee. When you break the crystals, you will earn extra Eridium, so be sure to bust any you come across. This currency can be used to buy new weapons, new skins, new decorations, and other goodies on your ship from the crazy guy behind the locked door. When you have the ability to smash the crystals, you can go back to the older planets and gather some there as well. The more you have the better, especially for the end game.
