How To Destroy & Cut Vines In Returnal
Vines are often blocking access to valuable health pickups, so you want to take them out. This guide on How To Destroy & Cut Vines In Returnal will tell you what special artifact you require if you want to cut down the vines and gain access to the incredibly valuable health pick ups behind.

Vines are quite common in Returnal and easy to spot as they are hiding health pickups that are visible on your map and mini-map. Returnal’s game world is procedurally generated, which means a large part of the games level design is randomized to create for new and interesting playthrough’s each and every time. As such, we cannot tell you exactly where to find the item you require, but we can give enough information to make sure you don’t miss it.

How To Destroy & Cut Vines In Returnal
In order to destroy the vines you need to progress through the story until you unlock the Atropian Blade. If you recall early in the game, during your first play through, you meet a very powerful enemy that kills you before the game truly starts. It may be possible that you’re made of enough leet sauce that the encounter with that boss didn’t kill you, but for the rest of us average folk, that will be your first death.

After a couple of hours of progress, depending on how often you die, you will encounter this enemy type again, in a large room. You don’t have to fight the enemy and can rush past towards the story exit, either way you will get to the correct room.

It’s a large room with a Crimson Gate inside – not something to worry about at the moment. There’s also a corpse on the floor. Interacting with the corpse will find you the Atropian Blade. Once you enter the room the entrance is barred by a Red Barrier, so you cannot leave until you’ve got the sword. This means once you progress far enough and find the room, you cannot miss the item.

You can now destroy vines in Returnal. The Atropian Blade is also used to destroy Red Barriers.

  • Vines often hide health and HP upgrades, so they are important to cut down
  • You need to find the Crimson Gate room, which is always present in each playthrough
  • The first time you visit the Crimson Gate, you will find a dead alien
  • Loot the alien to find the Atropian Blade
  • You can use the Atropian Blade to cut down vines
If you want to open the Crimson Gate, you're going to need the Crimson Key, simple right? This guide on Where To Find The Crimson Key In Returnal will tell you where to find the key as although you can discover the Crimson Gate very early in your adventure, it can take some doing to get the key itself.
Intrepid Explorers have likely found the hidden Data Cubes, but what do the do? This Returnal Datacube Guide - Deposit Into A Matching Device explains what the "matching device" means as you can find a secret compartment hidden behind a destructible wall that holds a Datacube, but then you need to find the Datacube Processor.
You may have spotted loot underwater but you can't drain the pool, you have to learn How To Go Underwater In Returnal. This guide will explain the process behind gaining access to areas that are underwater as, at least initially, if you attempt to explore beneath the surface you are returned to the shore injured.
