In order to unlock fast travel in SAO Alicization Lycoris you will need two things. First, you will need to find save points scattered all over the maps. These act as fast travel points so grab any you see as you are going along. In order to unlock the ability to fast travel though you will have to get to Centoria, which is the capital in this game. To do this, you will have to follow the story until you reach the area with Centoria in it. When you get to the city, you will have a cut scene and a time skip.
After the time skip, you will be enrolled at an academy and have a mentor who teaches you new sword skills. Follow the story, face her in a duel, and complete her tasks. When you return with the herbs she has requested, she will give you some extra training and this is when fast travel unlocks. There is a carriage near the academy you can use to fast travel out of town. After you use it once, fast travel will be unlocked and you can use it from your main map. You can only fast travel to travel points on the same map you are on.
You will have to progress in the story to go back to earlier areas, you are gated by main mission progression.
