You may have spotted loot underwater but you can’t drain the pool, you have to learn How To Go Underwater In Returnal. This guide will explain the process behind gaining access to areas that are underwater as, at least initially, if you attempt to explore beneath the surface you are returned to the shore injured.
Returnal is full of rogue-like obstacles that block your path. Red Barriers, Vines, each requiring you to progress in the game until you unlock the ability to traverse the obstacles. Water works much in the same. Although it’s not an obstacle that blocks your progress, it does hold some potentially powerful loot drops and goodies. While you can encounter water very early in your play through, as early as the second room on your first run, you will not be able to go underwater until much later.
How To Go Underwater In ReturnalMuch like with the other obstacles, you need a very specific upgrade to get underwater, it’s called the Hadal Ballasts. You will need to progress through most of the game before it unlocks. Initially you start in the Overgrown Ruins biome. As you defeat bosses and progress through the game, you will reach new biomes with new challenges and rewards.
You need to progress through the game until you reach The Fractured Wastes, which is the 4th or 5th area you get to visit. Then, when exploring this area, you can find a room with another alien corpse inside. Interacting with the corpse will unlock the Hadal Ballasts item.
Once this item is collected, you can go in and out of water as you please. It’s a passive ability, so doesn’t require you to activate it.
- You will need to complete all levels up to The Fractured Wastes
- Once you reach that area, the story will have you finding several keys
- Once all of the keys have been found, you can access the room
- Much like the Crimson Key, you loot the Hadal Ballasts item from a corpse
