This may be available earlier in the game and I missed it but I’ll just explain the steps I took. I had completed the castle area and return to the village for the second time. Speak with the Merchant and you will see a briefcase item costing 10,000. You can purchase this to expand your inventory limit. If you do, another option appears. It’s another inventory upgrade, this time for 30,000. It’s well worth the investment as it has more than double your basic carrying capacity.

It may be available sooner, so just make sure to check the merchant whenever you bump into him. It’s the first item you can purchase, so it’s tough to miss. Once you purchase both the upgrades, you should be able to gather all the loot, weapons, and items you find for quite some time.
