Although you cannot trade units directly, you can trade items, meaning you can give your friends expensive resources to sell to help them out.

Make sure you join a friends game. You need to progress through the missions until your base is up and running. However, if you started an existing character you can just create the item you need. You must make a Refinery. This special piece of equipment allows you to process raw materials into usable products and substances.

Ignore the fuel and the output, that’s only if you’re actually using the refinery to, well, you know, refine.
