When you first start playing Anthem everyone starts with the same Javelin, the Ranger. This Javelin acts as the tutorial, allowing you to progress through the first few story missions. Once you complete a couple of story missions, you will get the ability to unlock a new Javelin. At this point, you lost access to the Ranger and must unlock it to use it again.

How To Unlock More Javelins In Anthem
