The feature has made an appearance in a lot of Pokemon games since Pokemon Yellow and while the exact mechanics and limitations change from game to game, it is a feature available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Before you’re able to have your Pokemon follow you, you need to reach Hearthome City. This is shortly after you get your second Gym Badge and have unlocked the bike. Continue following the story and before long, you will arrive in Hearthome City. Once here you will want to explore Amity Square Gate. This is a special area where trainers can take their Pokemon out for a walk. Head into Amity Square Gate and choose a Pokemon to walk around with. After you walk around leave. After this point you no longer need to return to Amity Square Gate. You can open the main menu, navigate to the Pokemon section, and then select your Pokemon. You can put them back in their ball or summon them this way.
