Need to find specific wildlife & animals in Red Dead 2 for perfect pelts? This Red Dead Redemption 2 Animal Wildlife Location Guide will tell you a great spot to find each of the different species. Throughout Red Dead Redemption 2, you will hunt wildlife for perfect pelts for camp and gear upgrades.
Various camp upgrades and upgrades for Arthur, such as Satchel upgrades, require various materials, ingredients and resources gathered from the many different types of wildlife that inhabit the world. As long as you’ve mastered the basic hunting elements (check out our guide to perfect hides) you shouldn’t have a problem gathering everything you need.
Most of the wildlife can be found in multiple places. The places we’ve chosen to feature are chosen because they are reliable and easy to reach. When you reach an area, be sure to target the animals and check the star rating they have. You need a max level, 3 star, to receive a perfect hide. In order to get the perfect hide to remain perfect, you need to defeat the animal with minimal damage. Preferably, a single shot to the head with the correct caliber rifle. Inspect the animals prior to taking them down and you will receive the exact information you need to get the perfect kill for the perfect hide or pelt.

Rabbits can be found early and often. They are found on roads from time to time but really like to hide in tall grass. If you are on your horse they are easily spooked, get on foot if you want to track them effectively. Use a Varmint Rifle and a headshot to get a perfect hide. If you hit the ear and not the head, the pelt will be ruined. Both of the locations below are south of Valentine.
Beaver’s can be found most lakes though a lot hang out at lake Owanjila, here on the map. To get a perfect pelt you will need to get a head shot with a Vermint rifle.
Whitetail Deer are extremely common from the start of the game. You can find them in the woods but they also like to frequent the river, giving you a great opportunity to hunt them from horseback. Use a rifle and get a headshot to get a clean kill on a Whitetail deer. They are plentiful near your first camp and south of Valentine.
Gators can be found all over the Bayou. They can be tricky to skin because if they die in deep water, the corpse disappears. Try to take them down in shallow water or on the waters edge. You can use the bow or a scoped rifle with a head shot to get the perfect pelt.
Elk can be found to the north east of Valentine, in Cumberland Forest. They will be among the Whitetail deer in the woods. A scoped rifle and a head shot if how you get a perfect hide from them.
Black bear and Grizzly Bears can be found on the map in a couple spots. Black bears are more timid and typically run away from you, they also have a smaller chance of having a 3 star hide. Grizzly bears will straight up rush you and kill you if you don’t get them first but they have better hides. Anything but a scoped rifle is going to result in you destroying the hide.
The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Ram can be found up in the mountains. There is a bed of flowers here on the map that you can normally find a few of them hanging out. Use a rifle to get a clean kill.
