Returnal Datacube Guide - Deposit Into A Matching Device
Intrepid Explorers have likely found the hidden Data Cubes, but what do the do? This Returnal Datacube Guide – Deposit Into A Matching Device explains what the “matching device” means as you can find a secret compartment hidden behind a destructible wall that holds a Datacube, but then you need to find the Datacube Processor.

This is likely something you’re going to discover during the first one or two biomes in Returnal. There are special Datacube items that you can pick up. You can only hold one at a time as it occupies a unique slot within your inventory. Once you’ve got one, if you attempt to pick up another, it will drop the first. You can decide which to take with you but ultimately, you’re going to want to collect all of them.

After you defeat the first boss there’s a good chance you will find a Datacube in the room immediately after the boss room. However, you can find one earlier in the first biome as there’s a secret wall that can be destroyed. It looks cracked and broken, just needs a helping hand. Either way, once you have a Datacube, you’re going to need to find the Datacube Processor.

There is one in the boss fight immediately after the room, in the same area as the Datacube. This means, if you find it in the first biome and you’re good enough to beat the boss in that same run, you can deposit that datacube and then grab the other one.

Datacubes unlock permanent buffs and items that become available in future runs.
