What Is Tera Type In Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet

Tera Type is a new type in Pokemon relating to a new feature called Terastallize. This guide on What Is Tera Type In Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet explains the new Tera Type system and how it combines with a Pokemon’s base type to add new and exciting combinations and features to the game.

At the beginning of the game, when you follow the story and first arrive at Naranja Academy, Nemona will be there when you arrive. After a short bit of story Nemona and your character will encounter the Team Rocket-style enemies of the game, Team Star. Before the fight Nemona will explain that she has done something on your behalf and gives you the ability to Terastallize your Pokemon.

What Is Tera Type In Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet

If you check the Pokedex, every Pokemon you catch has a new type, a Tera Type. This represents the type of Pokemon it will transform into once you Terastallize it. For example, my Gyarados has a Water/Flying type, as is traditional for Gyarados, but its Tera Type is Water. This means once I Terastallize it becomes a Water Type Pokemon and all of the Water-based attacks receive an additional attack bonus.

This new system allows you to take any Pokemon and change it’s Tera Type to get STAB (Same type attack bonus) on abilities they would normally not get it with. This creates a near endless stream of new and highly powerful Pokemon combos to add to your party.
