There is a Task in The Front that requires 10 Crude Oil. This guide on Where To Find Crude Oil In The Front focuses on the early game discovery of Crude Oil so you can get the Task done. There are two methods here, one of which is a bit buggy at the moment, but we’re hoping it’s fixed by Early Access launch.

The first method is the Manual Miner. This is a tech you can unlock that allows you to place a drill near your base. You can then simply interact with it to sit on it and select the Crude Oil option. This does work, in regards to gathering Crude Oil, but it doesn’t seem to count for the quest objective itself.

Where To Find Crude Oil In The Front

The other method, which is much more reliable but a bit harder to find, is to search around for a pile of mud. It’s large, dark brown, hard to miss. You need to use a spade on the mud, this will let you harvest some stone and some Crude Oil. This one works 100% in terms of unlock the Task items.
