At the time of writing, February 25th 2021, Nintendo has released the 1.8.0 Mario update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but the content is not yet available. You can download it today and I highly advise you download it before release as you get Mushroom Muriel as a gift that you can place inside your house.

If you want to buy the new Mario exclusive items, you will need to wait until the event begins. The Mario event in Animal Crossing: New Horizons will launch globally on March 1st. It is at this point that you will be able to actually experience the new content the game has to offer.

Anytime before that point, you will only be able to obtain the mushroom reward for downloading the update before release.
