The whole thing starts with the Yoshi from the crane game in the village.
After you win Yoshi, head to the upper part of the village and you will see a building that has two doors on it. Go in there and speak to the woman with the baby. She will ask you for the Yoshi Doll and give you a Bow Tie in exchange. Not really a fair deal in my eyes, but we need the item to progress in the quest.
The bowtie is also handed off in the village. Go to the house with the Chomp in front of it and go into the smaller room connected to that house. Inside there is a small Chomp who wants to bowtie. She will give you a can of her dog food in exchange.
The dogfood is the first item that will take you out of Mabe village. Head back down to the Toronbo shore and a little past where you found your sword, there is a shack. Inside the shack there is a gator who loves canned food. He eats it up and gives you some bananas. Here is where you can find him on the map.
The Honeycomb is traded to the Bear Chef in Animal Village. You need to give it to him in order to progress past the village. He will give you a pineapple in return.
The Hibiscus can be traded to a goat lady in the Animal Village. Her house is to the right of the sculptor’s house in the village. She will give you a letter for your troubles.

You cannot do this part until you get the Flippers from the fourth dungeon. Once you have the flippers, jump off the bridge here and swim underneath it.
Hop up on the boat and talk to the man to trade him the hook. He will give you a necklace as a reward.
The necklace belongs to a mermaid that is just to the north of where the fisherman is. Swim out from under the bridge and then swim north to her. Talk to her and she will give you a scale for the necklace.
The scale is the last part of the trade quest and you will need to the Hookshot in order to access the area. Once you beat the fifth dungeon and have the Hookshot, head here on the map and put the scale in the statue.
You will be rewarded with a Magnifying glass for your trouble. This can’t be traded, but you can use it in Mabe Village. Go back to the Mabe Village library and read the book on the bottom left. This will give you a clue you will need later in order to beat the game. With that, the trade quest is complete.
