Dead Island: Riptide
Dead Island: Riptide is a continuation of 2011’s successful Dead Island. It is an action-adventure game in which we fight zombies, looking at the amazing massacre from first person perspective. Having barely escaped from the island of Banoi, the four characters from Dead Island (Sam B, Logan Carter, Xian Mei and Purna) find themselves in the middle of slaughter yet again. Their helicopter crashes and a series of unfortunate events finally makes them end up on another exotic island, Palanai, also invaded by zombies.
A John Morgan joins them – a brand new hero, ex-soldier great at martial arts and a great addition to Dead Island’s fighting system. He fills up the hole there was in the first instalment as a person skillful in the art of bashing zombie skulls from up close. He actually doesn’t even need weapons. Those are pretty common on the islands, but you can still find yourself with none. That is when you need John. Cooperation between all the characters is crucial for their success as every one of them has different abilities. Apart from brainless (see the pun?) zombie killing, we can also engage in various kinds of side quests.
One of the novelties is defending your base from incoming waves of monsters. You need to set of various defense systems and blockades and repair them as soon as something happens to them. Cooperation was the best part of Dead Island and it is so in Riptide too. Up to four people can beat the main campaign together and it is definitely the best way to do it. The graphics haven’t changed a lot, but the new weather system is worth mentioning: now weather dynamically changes, making the islands even prettier and more vivid. Dead Island Riptide cannot be called a real sequel though. It is only a good pack of additional content.
