Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is an open world action role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic Boston in the year 2287, two centuries after a nuclear war wiped out the American mainland. The player takes on the role of a ‘vault dweller’, the resident of a special vault designed to survive nuclear war. Returning to a wasteland after spending 200 years in the vault, the player must now explore a completely changed Boston.
Fallout 4 is the fifth game in the long-running Fallout series of games and is a direct successor to Fallout 3, which was also developed by Bethesda Game Studios. Many of the gameplay elements from the previous game are retained, with players exploring the nuclear wasteland, interacting with characters and fighting off the many terrors of the wastes: from raiders and bandits to fearsome, mutated creatures to ghouls: people mutated by the radiation from nuclear blasts.
At the start of the game, players create their character using a powerful customization engine, allowing for considerable variation in appearance, as well as a choice of gender. After that, players can customize their characters attributes using Fallout’s signature S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, which influences the ‘perks’ the player can attain: perks being special abilities that earned every time the player levels up. The game allows players to choose freely between first-person and third-person perspectives. Fallout 4 also features the series’ famed optional V.A.T.S. system, in which time is slowed down considerably, and players can choose commands that can be executed at the cost of ‘Action Points’.
A massive world awaits the player, including hundreds of locations, characters and quests, with plenty of interactivity. Choice remains the heart of the game, with players being required to make innumerable choices, throughout the game: such as choosing their companions, the factions they represent, their choice of weapon (which include melee, ranged and explosives), stealth options, as well as extensive character interaction possibilities. As the story escalates, these choices pile up, and the consequences of these choices become all the more apparent, deciding the fate of the wasteland.
Fallout 4 introduces a powerful new crafting and building system. Players can craft weapons and armor from workbenches, recycling junk found in the wasteland and creating powerful new combinations and extending customization. Players can also build settlements, including houses, utilities, defenses and props. These settlements must then be defended from raiders, and the player is also responsible for supporting them with electricity, food and supplies.
