Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Mirrors Edge Catalyst
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is the reboot of 2008’s Mirror’s Edge, and is developed by the same development studio responsible for Mirror’s Edge, as well as the Battlefield series and Star Wars: Battlefront, DICE.

Set in the futuristic city of Glass, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has players taking on the role of Faith Connors, a ‘runner’ who servers as an illegal courier in the city. As opposed to the previous game in the series, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst explores Faith’s origin story, as well as her eventual attempt to take on the totalitarian conglomerate of corporations who maintain a stranglehold over the city of Glass.

As with the original Mirror’s Edge, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a first-person platformer game in which players traverse the city of Glass using parkour moves. Unlike the original game, however, the action is now set on an open world map that is freely explorable outside of missions. The game features a further de-emphasis on combat as compared to Mirror’s Edge, allowing Faith to evade enemies. Apart from using her slick parkour moves, Faith can travel across zip-lines and jump from rooftop to rooftop, evading the eye of her enemies. Faith’s “Runner Vision” returns, this time being enabled when the player chooses an objective on the map. In Runner Vision mode, objects and scenery items are highlighted in red, marking a path for Faith to lead her to her next objective. Of course, being an open world game, players are free to craft their own path to their objective, as opposed to the linear progression of the previous game. The races feature leaderboards, allowing players to compare their statistics with others. The lack of loading screens in this instalments means players are free to travel across the city without any delays and breaks. Apart from the main mission, Faith can engage in time trials, races and environmental puzzles.

Following criticism of the original game’s combat, the combat system was completely overhauled. In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Faith cannot use guns at all, instead focusing on her agility and moves to evade enemies. When needed, Faith can engage in melee combat, with moves that are an extension of her parkour movement moves. The game also features finishing moves, for which the camera switches to third-person.

Music for the game has been composed by Solar Fields, who also composed for the original game.
