Natural Doctrine

Natural Doctrine
Natural Doctrine is a Japanese RPG directed by Atsushi Ii, director of Patapon and featuring music by Noriyuki Asakura, who has previous composed for Rurouni Kenshin. The game also features an ending theme song by King Crimson.

Natural Doctrine follows the main protagonist Geoff, and his companions Vasily and Anka. The game is set in a universe in which humans combat other races with magic and swords. The humans built the fortress city of Feste as their home as they fought against species for survival. These other races include minotaurs, goblins and orcs. Geoff, the player character, is a guard solder dispatched to clear out goblin dens in order to grant access to resources that are crucial to mankind’s survival. Over the course of his adventure, Geoff meets other allies, such as Zekelinde the warrior, or Mel, a young girl able to control giant stone golems. The game is focused around the concept of natural selection.

Combat in the game is based on a turn-based battle system, and features vast numbers of allies and enemies on a single, gigantic battlefield. Time can be dynamically controlled in the game. Units that are in combat against each other have the ability to form encampments, where they can return to at the end of the turn. The encampments are, however, destructible. Units can also hide behind objects.

Natural Doctrine features a singleplayer mode alongside a multiplayer mode, which has versus and co-operative play available. Furthermore, the game’s online mode also has a card battle game, in which players compete against each other using their formulated decks. The game also notably features cross-play and cross-save across platforms. Following an update well after release, the game also includes an easy mode and a more detailed tutorial, as well as other difficulty-reducing enhancements, such as increased save points and strategy hunts in-level.
