Rainbow Six: Siege
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a tactical, multiplayer-only first person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Created after the cancellation of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6: Patriots, the game puts an emphasis on environmental destruction and player co-operation. The game is set several years after the deactivation of the Rainbow Program. With the program being reactivated under the leadership of a person known simply as “Six”, players take on the role of a Rainbow team operator who must confront The White Masks, a new type of enemy causing chaos across the world. The game features various game modes, such as Hostage Mode, in which attackers must extract the hostage from the defenders’ grasp, while the defenders are tasked with stopping that from happening.
In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, every operator has his own nationality, perks, abilities and equipment. Additionally, players have access to the “Recruit” operator, who has customization gear and gadgets. Players choose their operator at the start of the match and are not allowed to change while the match is active. Teamwork is absolutely crucial to the game, as players are required to pool together and integrate their various abilities to maximum advantage. Communication is essential throughout as the game as players must work together to bring down their targets. Teamwork, tactics and tension taken together, form the “three main pillars” of the game, according to developer Ubisoft Montreal.
Before the match begins, players get to plan their approach: while attackers have the ability to send a drone to find enemies and targets, defenders have the ability to fortify areas to slow down the attackers. Attackers can choose their point of deployment from multiple points on the map, and the lack of respawns forces players to constantly keep an eye out for threats and ensure their own survival. If downed, however, players can be revived by their teammates. Actions performed in the game earn the player ‘Renown’, which can then be used to purchase new characters and weapons skins.
One of the game’s hallmarks is its emphasis on destruction, which has been described by the game’s designer as “the center of the experience” of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. The game features a procedural destruction system in which players can break and destroy structures by using explosives or shooting through walls to make bullet holes. Different materials in the game react to the player’s attack differently, and the environmental destruction overall can give the player a tactical advantage, making for creative new paths and techniques for the players.
