WWE 2K16 is the 2015 edition of the WWE 2K series of the games and serves as a follow up to WWE 2K15. The game features a slew of updates to the series: reversals have been changed so that players only have a set amount of reversals they can use per match, and can no longer spam reversals throughout the match. Players can now also have their wrestler attack other wrestlers during their entrance. Artificial intelligence for referees and managers has been improved, and the chain wrestling minigame has been completely reworked. More enhancements have been brought in on pins and submissions, and a new set of animations have been added that include dirty pins and canceled pins. Online matchmaking has been further refined and improved, and the game will also feature rest holds that the player can use to regain stamina.
Three match types removed from WWE 2K15 make a comeback in WWE 2K16: ladder tag team, handicap tag team and tornado tag team. Numerous graphics improvements have been committed to the game, featuring new cloth physics and animations, making for more realistic attire. Crowd variety has been improved, as well as hair physics and sweat features.
The game features the largest roster in the series’ history, doubling on that of the previous game to include over 120 unique playable characters. Additional DLC characters build on top of this number. The game features numerous WWE game debuts, including Blake, Aiden English, Savio Vega, Rosa Mendes, Murphy, Mikey Whipwreck, Kevin Owens, Hideo Itami, Tyler Breeze, Stevie Ray, Simon Gotch, Enzo Amore and Col. Robert Parker. While Cody Rhodes is not included in the game as himself, he is available in his Stardust gimmick. The commentary team now features three members: John “Bradshaw” Layfield, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.
2K Showcase and MyCAREER make their return in the game, with the MyCAREER mode being significantly expanded in the game. The player now has considerably more control over their superstar, such as affecting the character’s personality through actions such as forming alliances and rivalries. The player can choose to support or defy The Authority, which can affect their career. The player can also create rivalries by interfering in other superstar’s matches.
