Minecraft 1.1 Released
Today marks the release of Minecraft 1.1, and many improvements and changes have been made. However, the very sought after mod support does not seem to be on the list, but hey at least there is language support now, right?
Here are the main items in the update:
* Bow Enchantments (arrows on fire set entities they hit on fire)
* Golden Apple recipe
* New language translations, and options
* Slightly smoothed color transitions between biomes
* Brewing time has been reduced to 20 seconds
* Spawn eggs have been added to creative (with the colors of the eggs look like the mobs)
* World type options have been added (only super-flat and default right now)
* The collision box on ladders has been removed
* Sheep eat grass and regain their wool
* The collision box on fence gates has been fixed
* Fence Gates can now be opened and closed with redstone
* Walking on Crops no longer tramples them
* Magma Cubes now drop Magma Cream
* Leaves now have a slight chance of dropping Red Apples
* NPC Villages now spawn treasure chests in blacksmith shops
* Melons and Pumpkins can now grow on Dirt, not just on Farmland
Some items are more interesting than others. Sheep regaining their wool by eating grass is definitely a nice touch to the game, as well as, apples that fall from trees and the Golden Apple recipe. The changes to fence gates will be well received. I can picture creeper fights happening on creative servers now, but that might lead to a little bit of a griefing problem.
However, after playing around a bit I noticed that you can no longer stand at the top of ladders. Also alternating ladders no longer work as a result of removing the collision box. The really bad thing about this is that there are a lot of great custom maps out there that are now no longer playable, or are impossible to play because of this change. Hopefully, Mojang fixes this in a future update in order to restore compatibility with older custom maps
And of course there were several bug fixes, and minor tweaks to the engine. Is the update worth breaking any mods you play with, and multiplayer connectivity? In my opinion no, so wait until your mods get updated before you jump onto the 1.1 band
