Is Watch Dogs Really Assassin’s Creed IV?

watch dogs assassin's creed 4If you have been to our home page in the past couple of days you will know that we have been covering the PlayStation 4 announcements including all of the games that will be released. One of the titles I am most excited about is Watch Dogs from Ubisoft. This open world game looks phenomenal with stunning graphics and a living, breathing world. After watching all of the advertisements and gameplay it made me start to think. Is Watch Dogs really the next Assassin’s Creed game? Just think Assassin’s Creed while you watch the trailer.

After combing through the gameplay footage the similarities are too close for me to not think so! First let’s take the running. Assassin’s Creed games have always been about free flowing movement, being able to jump around and interact with the environment. Now look at the gameplay of Watch Dogs. Watch the character run through the environment. He has the same exact flowing movement through the environment that Connar did in the Anvilnext engine. Even the tackling animation looks practically identical.

Another thing that made me think of the connection between Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed is the reliance of technology. The whole idea behind Watch Dogs is that we are all connected together through information. Does this not start to sound like the Animus? Remember the lines that used to kind of flash up when you were desyncing an event. They look almost exactly like the lines that are coming up when the character in Watch Dogs is looking at the data information. Check out a side by side of the animus lines in Assassin’s Creed 2 and Watch Dogs.

The last piece of the puzzle that I want to outline for you guys is that there is no proof that it is not Assassin’s Creed IV. When asked by Casey Scheld, our Review Editor and a Community Manager for Raptr, a Ubisoft representative only chuckled and didn’t say yes or no. Check out a pic from the Raptr Q&A thread.

I said it when I first was covering the event and I’m going to keep saying it. Everything about Watch Dogs screams Assassin’s Creed to me. The flow of the motion, the open world architecture and my gut all say so. Now these coincidences could be explained as just overflow from Ubisoft working on Assassin’s Creed and now this. I just don’t think they would look so similar if it was a new IP. Who knows, maybe they just called it Watch Dogs because they wanted a new IP. All of that aside, I would be well surprised if Watch Dogs is not called Assassin’s Creed IV by the time it launches on the PS4.
