Nacon Revo X Max is a perfect budget gateway controller for players looking for higher quality and improved longevity, while being introduced to a number of user-friendly personalization features that are typically reserved for a much higher price tag.
Immediately out of the box, I was amazed at how light the Nacon Revo X Max controller feels.
Having spent several days with my PlayStation 5 controller glued to my hands, it felt almost liberating to hold something so much lighter.
Fitting comfortably in my hand, Nacon Revo X Max and its perfectly positioned ribbed grips made it easy to keep the controller stable. Deep grooves on the rear of both grips and shoulder buttons also made even wider holding styles feel comfortable and tension-free.
Nacon’s dedication to the asymmetric style first caught my attention when they released their PlayStation 4 controller in 2019, and since then they have continued to build quality and features into controllers designed for every platform.
If you’re anything like me, some of the technical jargon on these modern products may not make a lot of sense, but the Nacon Revo X Max is the perfect bridge.
Nacon Revo X Max Review – One of Gaming’s Best Controllers on a Budget

Straight out of the box, this controller features a plug-and-play designed to be compatible with both Xbox and PC.
One can completely ignore its impressive feature suite, and just benefit from a fantastically-designed product that will last you years.
That said, an easy-to-follow instruction manual and several features are present that can be adjusted quickly and easily on the fly. This also makes it the perfect controller to dabble into the more personalized elements offered by newer tech.
Nacon Revo X Max Features at a Glance
- Hall Effect Technology
- Adjustable Joystick Tension
- Tactile Micro Switches
- Instant Triggers
- 1000hz PC Polling Rate
- “Shooter Pro” Mode
- 4 Vibration Motors
- Braided 3M USB-C Included
One of the standout features of the Nacon Revo X Max is Adjustable Joystick Tension, a feature I had never used before. Just beneath the sticks are two adjustable dials that change the tension for each individual stick.
Increasing the tension makes the stick slightly more resistant, while decreasing the tension can make it so effortless it almost feels like you could blow on it to move.

Combined with traditional in-game sensitivity options, I was able to fine-tune this controller to make flying in Wardogs almost as responsive as a mouse & keyboard setup. It definitely takes some getting used to, but the flexibility to switch on the fly means it doesn’t take more than a second or two to revert to something more comfortable – until you get it mastered.
It also works really well for games designed for mouse, offering quicker and more responsive movement of the mouse icon with reduced stick tension and increased sensitivity.
Eliminate Stick Drift
As is common across the Nacon range, the Revo X Max also features Hall Effect Technology.
While traditional official controllers still use physical contact points to track movement, Hall Effect Technology utilizes magnetic sensors instead. This all but eliminates stick drift, which is one of the more prominent problems with this generation of controllers.
I cannot stress the value of a Hall Effect controller at this price point. I have easily replaced six to seven official controllers, all because of stick drift or damaged shoulder buttons.
Even if the rest of the features aren’t something you’d traditionally use, you will struggle to find another controller of this quality at this price point.
Perfect for Shooters
A combination of technologies on the Nacon Revo X Max makes it the perfect tool for fans of shooters. The “Shooter Pro” mode allows players to remove joystick dead zones, offering faster response times for aiming and shooting.
This works perfectly with the Instant Trigger settings available for both the LT and RT buttons. Two micro-switches on the rear can be turned on or off. When turned on, it drastically reduces the time required to hold either aim or fire by shortening the distance between partial and full press.
As an aging gamer with slower reaction times, it definitely helps me feel a bit more competitive. This has been a feature seen on a number of Nacon’s controllers before, and it’s one of the things I loved most about the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro.
If you’re regularly gaming on Xbox and PC, this is one of the best budget controllers on the market. The official Nacon website lists the controller at $69.90, only slightly more expensive than official options, but likely to last years longer.
Perfect for Gaming on the TV
Alongside the 3m USB-C cable, which is enough to actually reach my couch, the Nacon Revo X Max is also compatible with Smart TVs. Switching modes is as simple as holding RB with X+A when plugging into a TV.
While Netflix continues to struggle with actual gaming controllers to play games (someone please explain that to me), this controller works perfectly for gaming via Xbox – which is made even easier with a free Game Pass Ultimate Subscription for one month.
I booted up the critically acclaimed Vampire Survivors, plugged the controller into the TV, switched mode, and jumped straight in.
One of the only issues I had with the Revo X Max is the USB-C port. It’s heavily indented at the top of the controller, which makes precise placement difficult – having to wiggle it into place each time. While this hasn’t caused any problems so far, with the fragility of USB-C ports, I could see it being an issue if it’s constantly plugged and unplugged over long periods.
The Nacon Revo X Max is a perfect budget gateway controller for players looking for higher quality and improved longevity, while being introduced to a number of user-friendly personalization features typically reserved for a much higher price tag.
