In a press release from Blizzard on Wednesday launch sales numbers where released and Diablo III sold a whopping 3.5 million copies in stores. However the more impressive fact is that the 3.5 million copies does not include the 1.2 million players that signed up through the World of Warcraft deal and I believe it does not account for digital sales as well. The press release states that

So now that Blizzard is rolling around in more piles of money after making an amazing game they also made mention to what happened with the launch problems. In foresight, a game being down the first day, for a game that will probably played for decades, will probably not matter at all when looking back but CEO Mike Morhaime said
“We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support.” – Mike Morhaim CEO Blizzard
Looking back I consider Diablo III’s launch a success. There where problems on day one but basically since then I have not had any problems logging into and playing Diablo. Also throughout the whole process Blizzard communicated with the community and had people working to get the servers up as quickly as possible. At the end of the day Diablo 3 is a great game that sold like hot cakes.
