Dragon Age 2
Dragon age II is the second installment in BioWare’s Dragon age series. The studio is known for cult rpg games like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights. In case of Dragon age 2 they yet again try to win our hearts with an rpg, this time action rather than a tactical one. We go back to the fantasy world full of dwarves and elves. This time we play as Hawke, a poor refugee that seeks shelter after the events from Dragon Age.
The character is customizable only when it comes to looks and gender. We cannot choose the race, we’re stuck as a human, but we do have three classes to choose from, each with a different set of skills, using varied weapons and tactics. We get to know Hawke story through tales told by future storytellers, so that we know that the ten years from Hawke’s life already happened. We witness and affect his journey to become the Master of Kirkwall. Depending on our choices, we find different allies and companions. What we do changes greatly the final outcome, who lives and who dies. During the journey, our character has various quests to complete.
He meets new characters and some of the old set, too. Some stories featured on side quests are really moving and worth knowing. The game is the exact opposite of a sandbox. We are forced to walk through linear corridors, never able to go where the developers didn’t want us to. That wouldn’t be a big problem, but half of the locations are almost copied. All the places you visit make you feel an unpleasant deja vu.
The combat system is much more dynamic than it used to be. It is very nice to look at but it lost a lot of its tactical aspects, the enthusiastic fans are not going to feel content. The dialogue system has been affected by major changes, too. Now we can’t choose the exact wording our character will use, we can also decide on his general attitude, like whether the response will be sarcastic, mean or good-natured.
