Overall, the story is great for this type of game, the multiplayer is definitely worth a play through at least once but I can't see the game being played much in 2-3 months unless they release a serious amount of DLC content, without the Story and the ability to create a number of builds, the game doesn't feel any different to a dungeon crawler released 5-6 years ago.
I hadn’t really heard much about Dungeon Siege 3 before picking it up, I do enjoy similar titles such as Baldurs Gate and Diablo, and having wrote reviews on those I thought it seemed fitting to write a review on Dungeon Siege 3.
Having very little experience with previous Dungeon Siege titles, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I sat down to review the game. Although I’m not familiar with the Dungeon Siege series I have put many hours in to dungeon crawlers and was really hoping this would add a lot more elements to a rather stale genre.
The game takes a typical RPG story approach at the start, you’re given a choice of 4 characters, all of which are industry standard in terms of type (Mage, Melee etc) and you find out you’re one of the last remaining bloodline of “Legions”, a group of wise warriors that were once relied upon to settle disputes and tackle any threats to the world of Ehb. Thanks to the actions of the games main protagonist, the people of Ehb turned on your order which almost resulted in total annihilation. The story continues from there in a typical RPG fashion, you make your way across Ehb gaining allies and forging alliances to help defend against those that wish to challenge the Royal Family.
The combat mechanics and leveling system didn’t really seem anything to be excited about. I felt as if I was still playing Baldur’s Gate but in high definition, the majority of the game I found myself spamming the same two abilities over and over. As you progress and level up you get to choose new abilities, proficiencies in those abilities and other choices that do allow you to create quite a unique build for any of the characters, it can be compared to many F2P MMO games in terms of build customizing options so the game does display some intuitive mechanics.
The quest system is nothing out of the ordinary, you’re even given a quest tracker that gives you the exact directions and locations of any quests making thinking about anything almost redundant. The amount of side quests was disappointing and the lack of any type of weapon customization or enchanting really made progressing with your gear feel almost automatic.
