The game also introduces new elements to the franchise, such as anti-gravity racing, allowing players to drive on walls and ceilings. The player can bump into other racers to trigger a Spin Boost, giving the player an extra speed boost. The game features new items, such as the Boomerang Flower, used to attack players with; the Piranha Plant, which attacks racers and obstacles in its proximity, the Crazy Eight, which gives the user eight items, and the Super Horn, which can be used to both attack and defend the player against obstacles, including the Spiny Shell. The game features a whopping 48 tracks, including 23 tracks returning from previous games, and 25 wholly original tracks. Of the total, 32 tracks were available at launch, while the rest were added via updates. Once online, players can compete with up to 12 other players from across the world and set up custom tournaments with special rules. Players can voice chat with friends between races and download ghost racers from all over the world and try to beat their time.
